Spotify is ready to make audiobooks the next pillar of its business after music and podcasts, as confirmed by the CEO of the company, Daneil Ek, during his Spotify’s Investor Day 2022 remarks. This was Spotify’s first investor day since it went public in 2018. The audiobook vertical by Spotify is expected to be a destination for creators. The company had announced the agreement to acquire Findaway, an audio tech company, late last year. Recently, Spotify had also announced that it expects to reach $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,780 crore) revenue annually in the next 10 years.

Spotify will make audiobooks the next major vertical of the company. Ek stated, “Today, the global size of the book market is estimated to be around $140 billion (roughly Rs. 10,89,700 crore). That’s inclusive of printed books, e-books and audiobooks, with audiobooks having only about a 6-7 percent market share.” He also added that the audiobook industry had the potential to reach up to $70 billion (roughly Rs. 5,44,830 crore).

Spotify announced recently that it envisions to reach $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,780 crore) revenue annually in the next 10 years and promised high-margin returns from its costly expansion into podcasts and audiobooks. To reach its ambitious objective, Spotify would require to make its revenue grow nearly 10-fold from its 2021 revenue of $11.4 billion (roughly Rs. 88,660 crore). Besides that, Chief Executive Daniel Ek also forecasts gross margins to jump to 40 percent and operating margins to 20 percent in the same time.

The economic offences wing (EOW) of the state Crime Branch has asked Google for removal of at least 45 fraud loan apps from its Play Store.

In a letter to Google’s legal investigations support in the US, the EOW mentioned that the apps have been operating illegally and are not authorized by the Reserve Bank of India to provide loans to people.

“We had recently written to Google, seeking information about two specific apps KOKO and JOJO- – that cheated several loan aspirants in different states, including Odisha. During investigation, we came across 45 similar illegal loan applications, which should be banned and withdrawn from the Google Play Store,” EOW’s deputy inspector general J N Pankaj said.

These apps have been giving short-term loans to people instantly. They would send bulk messages to people asking them to download their apps for instant loan without verification. After downloading the apps, the users are asked for access to their contact lists. The users are also asked to fill up a KYC form, including the account number to receive the loan amount.

“Within minutes, the loan money would be credited to the accounts of the applicants. The company would then torture the applicants. Their agents would force the loanees to repay thrice the loan amount within a few days. When the loanees would ignore their calls and messages, the apps would hack their contact lists and send abusive and vulgar messages to their acquaintances,” Pankaj said.

The Meta-owned WhatsApp has recently made an announcement for a feature for group chats that would enable group admins to add up to 512 participants to a group. The messaging application has finally started rolling out the feature to all its users globally.

Reportedly, WhatsApp had rolled out the feature to the beta version of WhatsApp‘s Android, iOS, and Desktop-based apps. Now, WhatsApp has started rolling out this feature to all its users across the globe.

In order to update WhatsApp on iOS, go to the App Store, look for WhatsApp and hit the update option to get the feature. You can use a similar trick for Android phones as well. To get the feature in WhatsApp’s desktop app, go to Microsoft Store, search for WhatsApp and then hit the update button.

Previously, WhatsApp users could only share files up to 100MB in size.

In what is surely expected to be a boon for multilingual users, Android 13 is ready to introduce per-app language settings, so different apps can display in different languages. A new development in Android 13 Beta 3, available today, has streamlined the process a bit: only supported apps are shown in the App Languages menu now.

Previously, in Android 13 Beta 2, the App Languages page in Settings showed every installed app. As said by Esper’s Mishaal Rahman, that’s no longer the case: only apps for which developers provide resource files defining supported languages will populate in the list. When we tried the feature in Beta 2, it was found that it didn’t play nice with a lot of apps — so hiding non-compatible applications from the list is obviously the way to go here.

Rahman also points out that you can still make the App Languages menu display every app by toggling the settings_app_locale_opt_in_enabled flag under Settings → System → Developer options → Feature flags — just be aware the feature might not work as intended (if at all) in unsupported apps.
